School Motto

DT and Art

The Art and Design curriculum at Ribby-with-Wrea inspires children to become independent and unique artists. Every child should be offered the opportunity to love and enjoy art around them as Art and Design plays such a huge part in the world around us, it can be seen everywhere!

We encourage children to visit galleries and museums as this can develop a deepened appreciation for the work of other artists and inspire our children to explore their own curiosities in Art to build on their individual expression.

‘Every child is an artist’ Pablo Picasso.

Intent

At Ribby- with- Wrea, we emphasise the value of Art and Design through a language rich environment. Art and Design is a way for children to extend their skills and express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner through continuous exploration.

We believe children should be able to explore their own thoughts and ideas confidently to develop their resilience and critical thinking skills whilst using a wide range of media and exposure to subject specific vocabulary.

Our curriculum will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design whilst following the requirements of the National Curriculum. It gives them the opportunity to create artwork with a real purpose through line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form. As the children progress through these techniques, they should be able to think critically and develop a more accurate understanding of Art and Design. They will also be able to reflect on how Art and Design shapes our history and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of society.

Design and Technology provides opportunities for children to develop not only as learners but as individuals who aspire to become successful citizens as they journey through life.

We believe that through the learning of Design Technology we can release children’s inner ‘spark’ and make links to their needs (and wants) as they grow and develop through life. Design Technology is not a ‘stand-alone’ subject and through the careful development of our curriculum we aim to bring the skills taught into children’s long term memory and link to the diverse and complex needs as the children grow into the wider community.

Intent

Design technology is taught to challenge the children of today for tomorrows rapidly advancing world. Embedding concepts and life skills through engaging projects for real life situations, the children are provided with learning that they remember forever.

At Ribby-with-Wrea our curriculum builds on learning through the development of skills year on year. We believe that by developing design technology we can contribute to the quality of children’s lives, both within and beyond school giving them the skills that they need to help work towards their own cultural capital.

Through our specifically designed curriculum we aim for our children to become resourceful and capable individuals who relish in taking risks. Inspiring, rigorous and practical topics are designed to allow the children to be creative and use their imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems.

Miss Park is the Subject Lead and Mrs Murray is our Art Governor and Mrs Chappell is our DT Governor.
